Girl Scouts to discover the ‘Mysteries of Science and Math’
July 18. 2008 10:58AM
Twenty-eight Girl Scouts in grades 6-8 from Webster, Brandon, Sioux Falls and the surrounding areas will be taking part in the Dakota Horizons Mysteries of Science and Math camp. The camp is from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., July 21-24 in the Gilbert Science Center at Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
At the camp girls ages 11-17 will discover and solve mysteries using microscopes, geocaching, Fibonacci numbers and forensics.
“We want to teach girls about science and math in a hands-on, engaging and fun environment,” said Kristi Ofstad, Program and Learning Specialist for Girl Scouts – Dakota Horizons. In an effort to spark interest in professions less traditional to women, girls will be introduced to careers in forensics and biology. They will learn about geocaching and topographical maps and discover real from rumor in myth busting.
Eight area teachers will facilitate the various activities during the four-day camp to provide the hands on education.
The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation worked in conjunction with Girl Scouts – Dakota Horizons to fund the camp.
