Two Brandon residents were injured Monday afternoon when a semi-trailer truck collided with their Chevrolet Metro south of Highway 11 near the intersection with Aspen Boulevard in Brandon.
Kerry G. Ellis, 45, the driver of the car, was airlifted to Sanford USD Medical Center, while a 9-year-old boy, a passenger in the car, was taken by ambulance to the hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. Both were wearing seat belts.
Eugene Hlavac, 55, of Dante, the driver of the truck, was not hurt.
The accident occurred about 2:25 p.m. when the semi-trailer truck began sliding as it approached the corner, said Trooper Nicholas Jensen of the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The truck, which was hauling rock, crossed the center line and struck the car broadside.
Hlavac was ticketed for careless driving. Weather was not thought to have been a factor in the accident, Jensen said.
The semi is owned by Marion and Charlotte Hinseth of Irene.
