Friday’s lingering drizzle didn’t hamper the Brandon Valley Lynx, as they rolled over their ESD Conference opponent, the Mitchell Kernels, 41-6.

Austin Sumner threw six TD passes, four which fell into the hands of senior Cody Hausman. Sumner and the Lynx went to work immediately as Sumner found Chris Paclik on the second play of the game, who took it 85 yards for the score.

“Austin was on target and they play a man defense and didn’t do a good job of covering,” said coach Chad Garrow.

The Lynx capitalized on two Mitchell fumbles and scored four more TDs in the first half for the 34-0 half-time tally. Trevor Crow hauled in a 7-yard TD pass, before Hausman and Sumner connected on the next four scores, which were throws of 7, 1, 3 and 9 yards.

“Throughout the season, if you look at our stats, the number of receiving yards is split between a bunch of guys,” Garrow said.

In Friday’s game, Hausman led the reception stats, hauling in six passes for 116 yards. Crow caught two passes for 34 yards and Paclik had just one, the 85-yard TD strike. Brock Wickett and Dylan Niklason both had a catch for 24 and 6 yards, respectively.

Sumner was 11-for-19 for 265 yards total.

The Lynx added 121 yards to the stats in their ground game that was led by Sam Rall, who rushed for 37 yards in two carries. Crow’s five carries generated 23 yards. Tanner Tott (five carries) and Paclik (2 carries) added 23 and 22 yards, respectively.

The Lynx defense stifled the Kernel offense, limiting them to 176 total yards, all which came in their ground game. Mitchell quarterback Brent Havlik’s five passes all slipped through the hands of his intended receivers.

“Our defense did a great job of getting a couple of turnovers that led to some of our scores,” Garrow said. Junior lineman Dan Francis registered two QB sacks, while Ethan Sawyer and James Burkman each recovered a Mitchell fumble.

Francis had eight tackles in the game. Sawyer and Danny Larson were credited with a half-dozen apiece, and Cody San Miguel and Jeff Maassen each contributed four.
For Mitchell, Tanner Stark had 62 yards rushing on 11 carries.

The Lynx registered 15 first downs to Mitchell’s nine.

Sumner’s six TD passes in Friday’s game moves the Lynx quarterback within one of tying the all-time South Dakota high school record. The senior has 78 touchdowns, which is one behind Nathan Jacobson, who had 79 for St. Thomas More from 2005-07.

Despite the excitement of the surpassing the record, Garrow said the team’s focus isn’t on the numbers.

“Our focus right now is winning next week to be in a three-way tie for the conference title if Pierre beats Aberdeen,” he said. “There’s a lot of talk of the all-time career TD record holder, but we’re more worried about the second part of the season.”
The Lynx could share a piece of the ESD crown with a Pierre victory over the Golden Eagles Thursday.

Brandon Valley takes their 7-1 record to Watertown Thursday. The Arrows are coming off a 16-13 victory over Brookings.

“Watertown typically has been a power running team, but they’re trying to spread it out, so it will be interesting to see what they try to do,” Garrow said.
