November 03. 2009 6:00AM
Celia Benson, author of Rural Schools of Minnehaha County 1871-1971, will be the guest speaker for the Brandon Historical Society’s annual banquet at the Brandon Lutheran Church, Saturday, Nov. 7.
The $12 banquet tickets are still available. For tickets, contact Howard Brown, BHS officers and/or members. The doors will open at 6 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m.
Benson, a native of Minnehaha County, compiled the 392-page hardcover book about the 144 rural schools, which were in existence between 1871-1971 in the Minnehaha County. Her Byg/Pearson and Foster/Forney ancestors came to Dakota Territory in the 1870s and 1880s. They helped build rural schools in the Hartford, Wayne and Benton townships.
Benson will present a brief overview of the organization of rural schools in Minnehaha County and then through pictures, documents and memorabilia, provide more details on the history of rural schools in the townships surrounding Brandon. She will also provide information about placing markers at each of the rural school sites.
Because of the banquet, the Brandon Area Museum will be closed Saturday.
