Slug of seniors to lead BV grapplers

Brandon Valley’s 2009-2010 wrestling season is all about numbers.
A corps of 13 seniors and 10 incoming freshmen has the Lynx program in one of its best positions, not only for the current season, but for seasons to come.
“I think our strength this year is that we have a big group of seniors, and seven or eight of them will be in our lineup,” said head coach Jeff Duncanson. “We have big numbers in our senior class and big numbers in our freshman class, so we’re looking to take a step in the right direction.”
The Lynx return to the mat this season with five wrestlers who’ve garnered pre-season attention.
Among the rankings are eighth grader Adam Presler (103 pounds), senior Noah Halma (119), senior Cole Powell (145), a transfer student from Rapid City Stevens, and seniors Kasey Uecker (171) and Sam Seydel (189).
“Cole is a nice addition for us this year and Adam will be a new face in the lineup,” Duncanson said.
Halma, Uecker and Seydel all qualified for the state tourney last season.
“We hope to be a little more balanced this year,” Duncanson said. “Right now we’ll be strongest in our upper weights and will look to a few of our seniors to lead the team.”
Aberdeen Central gets the coach’s nod as the contender for the ESD Conference crown. “They’re tough again as always,” he said.
Brandon Valley goes up against the Golden Eagles at the Lynx’s Dec. 10 home opener.
As for Brandon Valley’s fate in the ESD league, Duncanson and company hope to move up in the rankings. “We have a full lineup with some good kids and hopefully we’ll surprise some people,” the coach said.
Brandon Valley opened its 2009 season Tuesday at the Lennox Triangular, where they went up against the host Orioles and the No. 3-ranked Vermillion Tanagers.
“That’s always a test to show us where we’re at,” Duncanson said.
The varsity lineup wasn’t established until late last week. “We’re currently in the midst of our wrestle-offs,” Duncanson said. “It will take us most of the week to finish, but we’re excited to see what the lineup will be like.”
Wrestling for the Lynx this season are seniors Uecker, Halma, Seydel, Powell, Andrew Amundson, Bryan Berndt, James Burkman, Tyler Johnson, Danny Larson, Michael Shoemaker, Anthony Ross, Mike Vigants and Dylan Treloar.
Juniors on the roster include Ryan Angerhofer, Garret Bratland, Victor Frazer, Calvin Ode, Chris Miller, Nate Monger and Devin Swanson. The sophomore class consists of Austin Eigenberg, Michael Frazer, Braden Heidbrink, Josh Miller, Mason Peterson, Collin Wibles and Nick Zangara. Freshmen wrestlers are Mason Bender, Joe Blake, Grant Dougherty, Gabe Langner, Trevor Meyer, Cole Reiter, Braiden Smith and Calvin Williamson. Presler, an eighth grader, and Wyatt Winter, a seventh grader, round out the roster.
