Garretson wrestling returns strong

Three Class B state place winners return to the Blue Dragons wrestling squad this season, including Tanner Donelan, who was state champ last season at 130 pounds. Other place winners returning are Scott Howe, who was sixth at 112 pounds, and Brady Bonte, who was eighth at 160 pounds last season.
Ethan Storment and Zach Lukes competed in the state tourney in the 2008-09 season but did not place. Storment is one of two seniors on this year’s squad. The other is Jess Kruid.
“I feel we return a great amount of talent that can lead us to a successful season,” said Jay Swatek, who is in his fifth year as head coach. He is assisted by Jason Bohl and student teacher Derek Pirner.
Twenty-two boys are out for wrestling this year. Their first meet will be at Tri-Valley on Dec. 1.
Swatek said Howard and Flandreau will be the teams to beat in the Big East Conference. At the state level, Canton and Tri-Valley will be strong. “I think they’re both going to be in the top three at State,” Swatek said.
