BV girls win defensive battle
Brandon Valley was victorious in a tight defensive battle against Brookings on Jan. 19, squeaking out a 25-23 victory.
“I thought it was two pretty good defensive teams playing each other,” said Coach Mark Schlekeway, whose team led most of the game before the Bobcats made a run late in the game. “I was happy with our defensive effort and I thought we got great looks offensively but we just couldn’t put them in.”
The Lynx netted just 20 percent of their shot attempts, 9-44, and were 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. Brookings was 8-for-34 from the field and hit only 1 of 8 free throws.
Kasey Presler led the Lady Lynx with six points. Three players – Kari Pierson, Miranda Schroeder and Allison Koehn – each contributed five points.
The two squads matched up on the boards, with Brandon Valley hauling in 33 to Brookings’ 32. Abby Moschell hauled in six of the team’s 33 total rebounds, while Brian Rogiers, Elyssa Ellis and Andrea Hanson have five apiece. Brookings grabbed 32 off the boards.
The 3-3 (3-2 ESD) junior varsity girls play Thursday at Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Lynx JV boys wins at Brookings
Brandon Valley’s junior varsity boys improved their record to 4-5 with a 67-58 win at Brookings on Jan.18.
Coach Craig Nelson said his team turned in a solid offensive performance, shooting over 50 percent for the first time this season.
“We need to continue to get each other open and take great shots,” Nelson said. “We know that we can’t depend on shooting well every night, and thus our defense must improve in all areas. Our consistency will come when we bring it on that end every night.”
Isaac Hanson led the offense with 17 points and a dozen rebounds. Brock Wickett and Trevor Crow contributed nine and eight points, respectively. Wickett also had five rebound and Crow offered five assists in the win.

JV girls top Mitchell by four
The Lady Lynx JV evened their ESD Conference record to 2-2 following a 40-36 victory over Mitchell on Jan. 16.
Coach Mark Schlekeway said his team was balanced from the field in their scoring, and defensively, they played well as a team.
Allison Koehn paced the Lynx with 10 points and Kasey Presler scored nine. Andrea Hanson and Elyssa Ellis tossed in six apiece and Rebecca Dysktra accounted for four points.
Brandon Valley shot 31 percent from the floor, 15-48, and were 8-for-15 at the line. Mitchell connected on 14-38 from the floor and was 6-for-7 at the free throw line.
“We continue to struggle from the free throw line, but it is my hope that we can improve this percentage now that we will have more than one game a week,” Schlekeway said.
Koehn hauled in eight of the team’s 26 rebounds. The Kernels had 35 rebounds.
“It was a physical game and I was happy to see the girls step up and control the game down the stretch,” Schlekeway said.
