On Jan. 18, just eight days prior to their Jan. 26 meeting, the Brandon Valley Lynx escaped the Brookings gym with a 44-43 victory. This time around, victory would go the way of the Bobcats, as a hot-shooting Brookings team claimed the 71-51 ESD Conference last Tuesday in Brandon.

“No two games are the same and that was our leading message to the team before our game with Brookings,” said Lynx head coach Brent Deckert. “Unfortunately, it was a hot-shooting Brookings team that was really ready to compete.”

The Bobcats trailed early in the first quarter, 5-2, but then scored the next nine points to assume the lead for the remaining three quarters of the game. The Lynx got within two of the Bobcats, 12-14, with less than two minutes to play in the first, but that would be the closest Brandon Valley would get to Brookings.

The Brookings offense controlled the next two quarters, out-scoring Brandon Valley 18-12 in the second and 19-9 in the third.

In the fourth, Brookings led by as many as 29 before the Lynx began chipping away at the deficit and scored the final nine points of the 71-51 game.

“The last three games we’ve had some trouble with turnovers. Some turnovers hurt us and some don’t, but the ones that lead to easy baskets are tough to recover from,” Deckert said.

Brandon Valley had 18 turnovers to Brookings’ 15.

Ben Schultz and Austin Sumner both scored in double digits Tuesday. Schultz had 14 and Sumner had a dozen. Tyler Trevino tossed in seven, while Bryan Brown and Sam Rall each accounted for five points.

The Lynx finished with a 44.9 percent field goal effort, 22-49, and netted just 4-of-11 at the line.

Brookings hit on 27-of-54 from the field (50 percent) and were near perfect at the charity stripe, 7-8.

Ryan McCutcheon led all players with 26 points while Tanner Odegaard added 17 – 15 which came from behind the three-point line.

Brookings had the definite advantage on the boards, 31-21. Sumner and Trevino both clamped on to five, while Ryan Ode and Ben Kramer each had three to their credit. For Brookings, Ryan Schaefer had a dozen. McCutcheon and Matt Crawford each hauled in seven.

The 3-7 (2-5 ESD) Lynx play at Watertown this Saturday and host Sioux Falls Washington next Tuesday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.

“We are really looking forward to February,” Deckert said. “We play half of our scheduled games in February, and as much as I love practice I think the guys will welcome some different competition.”
