Marching Lynx earn honors in Sioux Falls

The Brandon Valley Marching Lynx was one of two bands that earned the K&M Music Spirit of the Festival award at the Festival of Bands in Sioux Falls Saturday. The Madison High School Marching Band was the other. In addition, the band earned third place in the parade competition and eighth place in the field competition, the highest-scoring South Dakota school at the finals.
Director Jesse Miller said he was pleased with how the Marching Lynx performed on Saturday, especially considering cold temperatures.
“We had less than ideal conditions with weather and the students remained quite poised throughout the day,” he said. “The biggest challenge for us was preparing for finals competition in under 30 minutes after we drew the first performance slot.”
Miller said the students were able to respond positively to a few adverse conditions to put on a great performance.
“As a whole, the students left the field feeling very good about their performance and had much to be proud of from the day. That feeling of accomplishment is a credit to the hours of focused preparation put on by those students.”
This Saturday, the Lynx will compete at the USD Quad State Band Festival in Vermillion, the only competition of the season held indoors – at the DakotaDome.
Also, the band will travel to Orange City, Iowa, for the Dutchmen Field Championships. On Oct. 18, the Marching Lynx will perform their field show at halftime of the Brandon Valley football game before finishing their marching season with an indoor marching band concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30.
