Brandon Valley is being represented by five players on the Class 11AA all-state squad, which was recently selected by the South Dakota Football Coaches Association.
The all-state quarterback is senior Chase Marso of Brandon Valley, who passed for 3,152 yards and 33 touchdowns to lead the Lynx (11-1) to the state championship game for the first time since 1998.
For his career, Marso threw for 5,730 yards and 67 touchdowns to become one of the most prolific passers in state high school history.
“Chase has been an incredible leader for us,” said Brandon Valley coach Chad Garrow. “He is a tireless worker and leads his team by how he conducts himself on and off the field.”
Marso’s favorite target was all-state receiver Matt Vandeberg. The Brandon Valley senior caught 65 passes for 1,080 yards and 18 touchdowns while also making big plays on defense and special teams to spark the Lynx.
Also representing Brandon Valley are offensive tackle Joe Sandoval, defensive end Adam Guthmiller and defensive back Tony Tripp, all seniors.
Washington placed eight players on the elite squad, including senior wide receiver Nate Gerry, senior running back Sam Cooke, center Kyle Spalding, offensive tackle Grant Lewis and guard Austin Kuhnert. Representing Washington on defense are defensive end Austin Benson, junior linebacker Danny Marlette and defensive back Christian Parker.
Sioux Falls teams claimed 14 of the available 26 spots on the all-state team, with Roosevelt, O’Gorman and Lincoln placing two on the squad.
The Rough Riders are represented by linebacker John Wessel and defensive back Zach Tuschen, both seniors.
Selected from O’Gorman are fullback Nic Steffl and defensive tackle Max Smith.
Lincoln is represented by junior running back Caden Quintanilla and linebacker Luke Meyers.
Yankton placed guard Kellen Soulek, defensive back J.J. Hejna and punter Troy Hunhoff on the all-state team.
