Brandon Valley outscored the visiting Lady Bobcats 17-8 in the third quarter, erasing a 10-point first-half deficit en route to a 52-49 victory in Eastern South Dakota Conference girls basketball action Thursday.
The Lynx got offensive fuel from the senior duo of Allison Koehn and Brynne Rist, who finished with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Koehn did most of her damage in the second half after being held to just four points in the first half. The Lynx trailed 13-9 after a quarter of play and 27-24 at the break.
“We didn’t play our best basketball, yet found a way to win,” said Lynx head coach Mark Stadem. “We must become more consistent.”
After overcoming the first-half deficit in the third to post a 41-35 lead, the Lady Lynx built their own 10-point edge, only to see Brookings chip away and put the Bobcagts in position to tie the game with 5 seconds remaining. Brookings’ Amelia Miller hit a 3-pointer with five ticks left on the clock, and then forced a jump ball on the ensuing inbounds pass. Referees initially gave Brookings the ball, but following a lengthy discussion at the scorer’s table, the officials reversed their decision, handing it to the Lynx with 1.7 seconds left to play.
“From about the halfway point of the second quarter to the beginning of the fourth, we played some pretty good defense. Then in the fourth, we struggled on that end of the floor,” Stadem said. “We just need to learn to trust each other and things will come together.”
Brandon Valley shot 48 percent from the field, 20 of 42, and were 8 for 14 at the charity stripe. In addition to the offensive efforts of Koehn and Rist, senior Val Peltier tossed in nine.
Emily Johnson led Brookings with 18 points. Brookings had limited opportunities at the free throw line, where they converted just 2 of 5.
The two teams matched up on the boards, with Brandon Valley hauling in 20 to Brookings’ 21. Peltier latched onto five while Taylor Thorson, Koehn and Carley Kueter all had two to their credit.
Peltier also led the Lady Lynx with three of their eight total steals. Thorson and Koehn both had a pair. Thorson also had two of the team’s three total assists.
Brandon Valley limited their turnovers to eight.
The 2-2 Lady Lynx have one last road game before the holiday break. This Saturday, Brandon Valley makes the short trip to O’Gorman. Tip off is at 1:30 p.m.
