Although Mark Stadem’s Lady Lynx dropped a 48-42 Eastern South Dakota Conference loss Friday night to Pierre, the Lynx head coach said the effort his team gave was better than their previous game, a 52-49 win against Brookings.
“We went through a stretch in the second quarter where we turned the ball over and let up a bit at the defensive end and that stretch was probably the difference in the game,” Stadem said.
The Lady Lynx got things rolling offensively in the first quarter, posting a 16-4 edge. But Pierre battled back in the second stanza, outscoring the Lynx 21-9 for a tie game at the half, 25-25.
The Lady Govs mustered just enough offense in both the third and fourth quarters to overcome their hosts. Pierre scored 13 in the third and 10 in the fourth, while Brandon Valley was held to 10 points in the third and seven in the fourth.
“Pierre is a good basketball team. For being as young as they are, they are very experienced. We played a good game against them, but I think we kind of ran out of gas down the stretch,” Stadem said.
Brandon Valley converted 15 of their 40 attempts from the field, a 38 percent effort, and connected on7 of 13 free throws.
The Lady Lynx scoring was led by Allison Koehn, who had 20. Val Peltier tossed in nine and Carley Kueter accounted for six.
For Pierre, Sydney Palmer had 19. Kaitlyn Severyn and Taylor Hyde both scored eight. The Lady Govs were 11 for 23 at the charity stripe.
Pierre had a slight edge on the boards, 23-21. Leading the effort for the Lynx were Koehn with six, Taylor Thorson with five, and four apiece from Peltier and Kueter.
Brooke Merry dished out four of the team’s 14 total assists. Brynne Rist and Koehn each had three. Jordyn Griffith accounted for a pair.
Brandon Valley turned the ball over on 10 occasions; Pierre had seven.
“This was the second back-to-back game early in the season, and those can be tough,” Stadem said.
The 2-2 Lady Lynx play at O’Gorman at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and are then on break until Jan. 3 when they pay a visit to the Watertown Arrows.
