Brandon Valley wrestling coach Kraig Presler and the Lynx got a preview of the Class A State Tournament Saturday in Brookings, where they went up against all but three of Class A’s top teams. In the field of 17 teams, the Lynx placed eighth behind eight place winners.

Rapid City Central edged Pierre 229-217 to win the Les Tlustos Invitational. Rapid City Stevens was third with 148 and Roosevelt fourth with 141.

“Every one of our guys won at least two matches on this grueling day,” Presler said. “This tourney was really a preview of the state tournament … and I feel we underperformed in a few spots. A few corrections here and there and we are a top six team, as our goal continues to be placing as a team at the state tournament.”

Lynx senior Mason Bender raised his season record to 29-0. But staying unbeaten didn’t come easily, especially in the title match against Pierre’s Dawson Monfore. Bender the Monfore battled the night before in an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual in Brandon, where the Lynx wrestler pulled off the 3-2 decision.

Saturday’s meeting was equally grueling, as the two battled to a 2-2 ultimate tiebreaker
Bender got to the title match by pinning Mitchell’s Noah Taylor in 1:45, then scoring a 24-9 technical fall victory against West Central’s Brandon Pennock. In the semifinals, the Lynx posted a 16-5 major decision win against Roosevelt’s Francis Boehmer to set the stage for his repeat match with Monfore.

Senior Gabe Langner placed fourth in the 182-pound division. Langner recorded a pin in 3:41 against Yankton’s Cody Hanzlik, and then decisioned Madison’s Tyler Currey 9-5. His first loss of the day came against Dell Rapids’ Jackson Entringer, who made quick work of the Lynx, shouldering him in 48 seconds. Langner rebounded in his match against Rapid City Stevens’ Casey Johnston, who Langer defeated by a 2-1 decision.

Langner then met up again with Currey in the third place match, which Currey won by pinning the Lynx in 4:13.

Pletten (120 pounds) and Dougherty (145) both won fifth place in their respective weight divisions. Pletten lost a 7-2 decision to Gene Trimble of Spearfish, and then rallied back to pin Lane Schruers of Harrisburg in 1:47 and decisioned Trey Hohn of Mitchell. Rapid City Central’s Hayden Hansen defeated Pletten by major decision (11-1), which set the stage for the fifth place match and a second meeting with Trimble. This time, however, victory would go to Pletten, who won the match by a 5-4 decision.

Dougherty opened the tournament with a 9-0 major decision loss to Brookings’ Nick Hanson. He battled back through the consolation bracket, first pinning West Central’s Christian Witt in 3:54, and then posted an 8-2 decision win against Lennox’s Hunter Kjose. Yankton’s Matt Huber won a 5-4 decision over Dougherty, which set him for the fifth place match against Spearfish’s Chase Harmon. Dougherty 8-4 win came in sudden victory.

Other placer winners for the Lynx Saturday were Conner Rowbotham (6th, 113 pounds), Adam Presler (8th, 126), Wyatt Winter (7th, 152) and Andrew Sorensen (7th, 195).

Coach Presler and the Lynx get a bit of a break from the competition this week. On Thursday, the team travels to Brookings for an ESD dual and are then on break until Feb. 9 when they compete for the conference title in Mitchell.

“The next two weeks schedule is a little less taxing and should give us the time we need to iron out the trouble spots and peak our condition for the region and state meets,” Presler said.

Regions are scheduled for Feb. 14-15 at Sioux Falls Lincoln, and the Class A State meet is slated for Feb. 22-23 in Watertown.

Mason Bender kept his undefeated season alive in Friday's ESD dual against Pierre by outscoring Pierre's Dawson Monfore 3-2. The Lynx senior also went unscathed the next day in his four matches at the Les Tlustos Invitational wrestling tournament in Brookings to improve his season mark to 29-0. He met up with Monfore for a second time in two days in the tournament finals, where the two wrestled to an ultimate tie breaker (2-2), with Bender getting the win. Photo by Jill Meier
