Coming off their Friday road victory at Watertown, the traveling Lynx boys repeated the feat Saturday evening in the nightcap of the Lynx-Tiger girl-boy doubleheader in Huron. Brandon Valley kept the Tigers at bay to pull off the 50-40 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory, improving their season mark to 11-6.

“This was another great game and outstanding first half by the Lynx,” said coach Brent Deckert, whose team posted a 10-4 edge after a quarter of play and a 23-14 lead at the break.

Brandon Valley’s offensive weapon Saturday night was junior guard Nic Peterson, who registered 19 points in the win. Two other players – seniors Chase Marso and Adam Bauer – also finished in double digits. Marso scored 11 and Bauer had 10. Junior Jacob Adams tossed in nine.

“Nic has had two incredible games in a row,” Deckert said. “Huron is a great team and is as good defensively as any team in the state, and they do a great job of getting guys covered up through many switches in their defense. At times it just reduces us to a dribble drive team and that’s when Nic’s eyes just light up.”

Huron exploded for 16 points in the third quarter to trim the deficit to five, 35-30. But a 15-point fourth quarter was too much for the Tigers, who scored 10 in the same time frame.

“This was another great team victory,” Deckert said. “We shared the ball extremely well and fought through some foul issues for the win.”

Deckert also credited the play of 6-foot-6 junior Kevin Petersen, who came off the bench. “He played some huge, meaningful minutes and was outstanding,” Deckert said.

The Lynx shot 43 percent from the field, 17-40, and were 11-for-18 at the line.
Bauer and Petersen led the effort on the boards with seven apiece. Devan West clamped onto four.

Adams, Jacob Bruget and Peterson all had two steals to their credit.

The Lynx continue their ESD schedule this week when they play at Yankton Thursday and host Aberdeen Central on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The boys wrap up their regular season schedule at home Feb. 21 against O’Gorman.
