Lady Lynx nab 2nd at Roy Griak Invite

The Lady Lynx put on an impressive show at Saturday’s Roy Griak Invitational, and came away from the St. Paul-hosted race with a second place finish in the maroon division. Brandon Valley bested 58 other teams, including Sioux Falls Washington.
“This was a very good day for these girls,” said Lynx head coach Larry Beesley. “This was a big step forward toward the championship part of our season, (and) is the highest placing we have had at this meet for the girls.”
Over the next two weeks, the Lady Lynx will compete for both the Metro and ESD conference titles.
Led by eighth grader Haylee Waterfall, who crossed the 5K finish line in 20:27, Beesley said this was undoubtedly the best race of the season for the team as a whole, and mimicked a team that had success at the conference level last year.
“They ran with the toughness and confidence on Saturday that they had last year when they won the ESD Meet,” he said.
Backing up Waterfall’s race time and placing were the Birath sisters – Mikaela and Jaidon – who were 38th and 44th, respectively, with their times of 20:46 and 20:55. All three runners positioned themselves on BV’s Top 10 List, while Waterfall established a new eighth grade school record. Teammate Danica Kocer also set a seventh grade school record with her run of 21:13. She finished the race a step behind senior Kaija Nitz, who was 57th with her run of 21:12. Sarah Presler’s run of 21:24 garnered 68th place.
The Lynx boys paced themselves to a 15th place team finish out of 60 teams.
“This was a very solid race for the boys,” said Beesley, who had hoped for a top 10 finish. “They ran very well considering that this was the first time many of them had raced here.”
Jakob Hanna led the Lynx boys with his run of 17:27. That time earned the Lynx freshman 27th place in the 441-runner event. Jacob Hegland and Cody Dutson were 35th (17:34) and 89th (19:22), respectively.
The Lynx runners compete for the Metro Conference title at 4 p.m. Thursday at Kuehn Park in Sioux Falls. Harrisburg will host the ESD Conference meet on Oct. 12.
“This meet should give us a boost going into the next two weeks of conference meets,” Beesley said.
