The Huron Tigers proved their worth as the top-ranked Class AA team Saturday, as they sent the Brandon Valley boys home with a 51-36 Eastern South Dakota Conference loss.

The Tigers (5-0) jumped out to a commanding 31-14 lead in the opening stanza, never relinquishing it through the next three quarters of play despite scoring just two points in the second quarter and six in the fourth.

While the Lynx limited Huron to just two points in the second, that’s all Brandon Valley could muster in the quarter as well, for a 33-16 game at the half.

The Lynx added seven points in the third and out-scored the Tigers 13-6 in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the two-digit deficit that was built in the first quarter.

Lynx head coach Brent Deckert said his team was coming off a great week of practice, and was confident in their defensive game plan to take some things away from Huron’s inside game.

“They can beat you in a variety of ways but we knew we had to limit the chances that Justin Decker had the basketball,” he said.

The Lynx coach said his team did that. Decker, along with JP Noonan and Hayden Busch all finished the night with double digits. Decker scored 13, while Noonan and Busch both added 10 points to the winning cause. The Tigers connected on 21-of-44 from the field, and had limited chances at the charity stripe, netting 2-4.

The Lynx, forced to play without floor leader – senior Nick Peterson, who was out ill – converted 18-of-45 from the floor – and capitalized on 12-19 free throws.

Devan West and Jacob Adams led Brandon Valley with nine points each. Ryan Immeker tossed in five and Kevin Petersen accounted for four.

The Tigers had an obvious edge on the boards, 28-13. West and Petersen both had three, while Adams and Peter Choudek claimed two apiece.

The Lynx charted three assists, six steals (two each by Immeker and Dominic Nealy), and 16 turnovers. Huron had one assist, nine steals and 18 turnovers.

The 1-3 Lynx host Sioux Falls Lincoln this Thursday at 7 p.m. and travel to Yankton Saturday for a late afternoon ESD meeting at 4:30 p.m.
