The Mitchell Kernels posted their 34th straight home win Tuesday night at the Corn Palace, routing the Lady Lynx 66-45. The Mitchell win rested largely on the shoulders of Macy Miller and Taylor Volesky, who combined for 54 of the team’s 66 points. Miller had 31 and Volesky scored 23.

“I don’t know if you could ever truly shut those two down,” said Lynx head coach Mark Stadem. “But I thought our girls did a good job of competing.”

The host Kernels established their ground early, putting up 16 first-quarter points and 20 in the second to take a 36-16 advantage into the break.

The 1-5 Lady Lynx, who were led in scoring by Lexi Hoover’s 15, opened the third quarter behind a pair of 3-pointers to trim the deficit to 14. But the Kernels answered back with a 9-0 run, which shut the Lynx down.

In addition to Hoover’s 15, Lynx junior Carley Kueter accounted for a dozen. Taylor Thorson offered five. The Lady Lynx were held to 33 percent shooting from the field. 15-45, and collected on 11-of-16 at the free throw line.

Mitchell shot 23-of-56 from the field and was 14-of-17 from the free-throw line. The Kernels outrebounded the Lynx 34-20 on the glass. Kueter had six rebounds; Sydnie Buccheim and Becca Long both had a trio of caroms to their credit. Volesky led the Kernels with rebounds.

Twenty turnovers plagued the Lynx. Stadem said some of those were due to “poor decisions, but about half of those were due to them making plays,” he said. “You just have to give them credit, their length and athleticism will cause everybody they play problems.”

Mitchell committed 13 turnovers.

Branodn Valley had seven steals – three by Thorson – and a trio of blocked shots – two by Hannah Paauw, and six assists. Mitchell had 10 assists, 16 steals and four blocked shots.
