Winds in Sioux Falls peaked at 63 mph gust this morning. That came at 5:12 a.m., Brad Adams, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, said. Winds have subsided to a steady 20 mph gusting to 29 mph, but they will pick up again this afternoon.

“We’re going to get a bit of a break,” he said. Winds will peak again anytime after 11 a.m. to late afternoon with gusts of 55-65 mph.

Other peak gusts were:

• 60 mph outside Madison

• 61 mph at Orange City, Iowa

• 55 mph at Huron

• 52 mph southwest of Beaver Creek, Minn.

• 49 mph at Chamberlain and Mitchell

Those winds will create problems for high profile vehicles, especially on east-west highways, he said.

The National Weather Service said winds up to 60 mph, combined with blowing snow in areas, will create white-out conditions. All of northeast South Dakota, including Brookings, Watertown and Aberdeen, are under a blizzard warning, while the rest of the state, including Sioux Falls, is under a high wind warning until 9 p.m. Thursday.

The Department of Transportation is cautioning people about poor travel conditions Thursday, especially in the evening. They say travel along I-29 from Dell Rapids to North Dakota will be difficult.

The blizzard warning also includes all of eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. The entire state of South Dakota, except for a small portion of the Black Hills, is either under a blizzard warning or a high wind warning.

Adams hadn’t heard of any damage yet, but there was a tree downed into the roadway at 250th Street and 473rd Avenue just west of Baltic at about 6:30 a.m.

“I suspect there could be some (damage) especially if you have some things in the yard that aren’t tied down,” Adams said.

Temperatures will drop through the day. Sioux Falls was at 32 degrees at 6:45 a.m Temps will be in lower 20s by mid-afternoon, and mid-teens by the evening. The overnight low will be -1, Adams said.
Winds will subside overnight.
“It’ll rapidly diminish after midnight,” Adams said. Speeds will be 20 mph overnight, and 5-10 mph Friday.

The rest of the forecast is pretty quiet with a warm up over the weekend, hitting a high of 42 by Sunday.

Adams said a lack of snow pack to the south helps that warming trend.
