PIERRE, S.D. – Terry Arshem of Sioux Falls knew the day after the Jan. 18, 2014 Dakota Cash drawing that he had won the $79,809 jackpot. But since Jan. 20, 2014 was a federal holiday, he had to wait two days to claim his winnings at the Sioux Falls Lottery office.
“I called Monday just to see if the office might be open but I figured it wouldn’t be. That was OK, I could wait,” Arshem said.
Arshem heard on the news Sunday that someone in Sioux Falls was $80,000 richer and he wondered if it could be him. A check of the numbers on his Quick Pick ticket confirmed that it was. Prior to coming to the Sioux Falls Lottery office to claim the jackpot, the only person he told about his win was his wife, and she didn’t believe him.
“She kept saying ‘you did not, you did not.’ I told her to quit saying that because she was going to jinx us,” he said.
Arshem, who works at Preferred Real Estate in Sioux Falls and is a father of two and grandfather of four, calls himself a sporadic lottery player. He generally plays Dakota Cash and his wife Powerball, playing the other lotto games and scratch tickets on occasion. He purchased his winning ticket at Lewis Drug Southgate in Sioux Falls; the store will receive a $3,990 bonus for the sale.
The couple plans to put the unexpected windfall into savings. Said Arshem, “I’m getting near to retirement and this will be a nice little nest egg.”
Dakota Cash is played and won only in South Dakota; the odds of winning the game’s jackpot are 1:324,632. The jackpot currently sits at $20,000 for the next drawing on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
