Brandon Valley utilized their height advantage and the absence of South Dakota State-bound Kaitlyn Severson from the Pierre lineup to nearly upset the visiting Lady Governors Friday in Brandon. Severson is sidelined by a sprained ankle.

Behind the length of 6-foot-1 junior Carley Kueter, who produced 10 of her team-high 14 points in the first eight minutes alone, the Lady Lynx jumped out to a 13-6 lead by the quarter’s end.

But then the second quarter belonged to the Lady Govs, who found a way to contain Kueter and put the ball in the hands of junior Sydney Palmer, who finished with 20 points. En route to the 15-13 halftime score, Pierre out-scored their hosts 7-2.

“We are getting better,” said Lynx head coach Mark Stadem. “Our record may not show it, but we are seeing progress. On the last four games we only gave up about 44 point per game. We’ve cut our turnovers down and we aren’t giving up near as many offensive rebounds, which is giving us a chance.”

Coming into the third, the Lady Govs picked up right where they left off before the break, with Palmer putting up five points in the first two minutes of the quarter for the 22-17 lead. The Lynx regained the edge (24-22) at the 2-minute mark when sophomore Kasara Pollema hit her lone 3-pointer of the night. Neither team could put the game out of reach the rest of the way, with the third quarter coming to a 27-25 close, Pierre’s advantage.

Lady Lynx senior Lexi Hoover drilled one of her two 3-pointers of the fourth quarter with 7:00 to play, to get her team within one, 28-29. Ironically so, it would the senior who would tie the game at 37-37 with 45 ticks left on the clock. And that’s where the game stood until Pierre’s Jory Mullen was sent to the foul line with 1.6 seconds to play. The Pierre junior hit both to lift the Lady Govs to a 39-37 ESD win on the road.

The Lynx, however, gave it once last try on a Sydnie Buchheim inbound pass to Hoover, who was stationed at mid-court. Hoover’s shot was on aim but fell short as the clock ran out.

The Lynx turned in a 29 percent effort from the floor, converting 13-45. That included an 18 percent effort from beyond the arc, where Brandon Valley had a tough go, making just 3-of-17.

Kueter was the only Lady Lynx to finish in double digits. Hoover scored six, while underclassmen Taylor Thorson and Elsie Zajicek both tossed in four.

Brandon Valley collected on 8-of-15 free throws (53 percent), while Pierre cashed in on a comparable 7-of-12.

Both teams had 19 rebounds to their credit with the bulk of the work coming from Brandon Valley’s Kara Schroeder and Sydnie Buchheim, who had five apiece. Thorson latched onto four.

With a goal in mind of trimming down on turnovers, Brandon Valley limited them to a dozen Friday night; Pierre had 16 in the game.

Thorson (3) and Hoover (2) combined for all five of the team’s steals; Zajicek had a pair of blocked shots.
