Alec Finch will tell you he’s not the fastest runner.

But he’s working at it.

As for that lack of speed, it’s paying off for this 2014 Brandon Valley senior, who last week signed the paperwork to play baseball for the Dakota State University Trojans.
Moved from right field to catcher– “I had the arm, but not the speed,” Finch says – he found his place on the Lynx club and American Legion teams behind the plate.

“When I first started catching I was slower than everybody on the team,” he recalls.
“But I’ve gotten better over time.”

Lynx club team head coach Grant Hieb agrees.

“Alec has been a solid player behind the plate and has been a leader of our defense,” he said. “We’re hoping this year he will be the catalyst behind our pitchers, taking control to be able to work on mentally how they’re going to prepare on the mound.”

Although Finch didn’t get a ton of playing time as a junior, he’ll be heavily relied on in his upcoming senior season.

“I’ve been working really hard in the off-season,” he says. “Last season I didn’t get to play as much as I would’ve liked. I feel my hitting could’ve been better. But this season I really hope to do well.”

The son of Scott and Sheila Finch of Brandon plans to study cyber operations (computer hacking/security) at DSU. “I’ve mostly been looking for computer programming, and DSU is a fairly good fit,” he said.

And Finch says DSU is a good fit for him, both academically and athletically.

“I did fairly well with computer programming in high school,” he said.

Finch says he’s been playing the game since he was introduced to it in T-ball fashion.

“I can’t imagine playing anything else,” says the one-sport Lynx athlete.

As for Coach Hieb, he wishes the senior catcher nothing but the best.

“I’m hoping he can go on to college and take away what he’s learned here with us,” Hieb said. “And it sounds like he’s able to compete to get a spot.”
