Rapid City host of 83rd annual Boys’ State Tennis Tourney

Twenty teams totaling 128 individuals have entered the 2014 South Dakota Boys' State Tournament, where champions will be determined in six singles flights and three doubles flights over the course of the three days, May 22-24. Previous champions participating in the tournament are as follows:

Tommy Entwistle, senior from Sioux Falls O’Gorman, will return to defend his championship in Flight 1 Singles. 2013 Flight 2 Singles champion, Chuck Tang, Rapid City Stevens, will compete in Flight 1 Singles this year. Last year’s Flight 3 Singles champion, Austin Noeldner of Sioux Falls Lincoln will move to Flight 4, and Flight 4 Singles champion, Jake Moran, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, will move to Flight 3.

Sophomore Alex Hegg of Mitchell, 2013 Flight 5 Singles champion, will compete this year at Flight 3, with 2013 Flight 6 Singles champion, Trae Olson of Rapid City Stevens, competing this year in Flight 2.

New champions will be crowned in First Flight Doubles as the 2013 champions, Jordan Feige and Tanner Heiser of Watertown, have both graduated. Flight 3 Doubles will also have new champions. One-half of the Rapid City Stevens championship team has graduated, and the other half, senior Trae Olson, will be competing with a new partner in Flight 1 Doubles. The 2013 Flight 2 Doubles champions from Sioux Falls Lincoln, Austin Noldner and Brent Heflin, will each compete with new partners this year, Heflin in Flight 1 and Noldner in Flight 2.

The 2013 Team Champion was Watertown. A team champion has been determined the past 43 years of the state tennis tournament.

First round singles matches begin at 9 a.m. with Flights 1, 2, and 3 at Sioux Park, and Flights 4, 5 and 6 at Parkview Tennis Complex. Doubles matches will start at 12:30 p.m. with all three flights at Sioux Park.

Matches continue on Friday at Sioux Park at 9 a.m. and at Parkview at 8 a.m. On Saturday, play resumes at Sioux Park starting at 9 a.m. For a complete schedule or rain delay information, check the SDHSAA website: www.sdhsaa.com.
