Saturday’s Pigskin Classic has a lil’ something for everyone
September 05. 2014 9:24AM
The celebration starts early – 6:30 a.m. – when Lynx fans can reserve their stadium seating and continues virtually non-stop until late Saturday night when the Brandon Valley Athletic Boosters hope the town will be celebrating a gridiron victory over Huron.
The 14th annual Pigskin Classic – a day of festivities celebrating the first home football game of the season – really does have a little bit something for everybody – from fun and games to good food and football.
Once the gates open for reserving stadium seating, the BV Booster Club will sell memberships and Lynx spirit wear at their booth from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and again at 5 p.m. through halftime of that night’s Pigskin Classic featuring the Lynx and Huron Tigers.
After Lynx fans have reserved up to six-feet of bleacher space in trade for $10, then it’s time (from 7 to 8 a.m.) to register for the 3K Walk/5K run. Registration forms are available at www.brandonvalleyschool.k12.sd.us/boosterclub/default.htm.
Besides the early-morning race Saturday, organizers have planned a youth pedal pull, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a cheerleading camp. And two local organizations are back with their respective soccer and football competitions that afternoon.
The Pigskin Classic celebration actually begins Friday night, when Brandon Valley seventh and eighth graders take to the dance floor from 7 to 9 p.m.
The fun then rolls over to Saturday morning, when boys and girls (grades 4-8) tip off the annual 3-on-3 competition at 8 a.m. The 3-on-3 hoops action continues until champions are crowned in all divisions.
A cheer camp, led by the Lady Lynx cheer program, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Cheer camp for grades K-2 runs from 8:30 to 10 a.m., and the camp for girls in grades 3-8 is 10:30 a.m. to noon. All participants are invited back that night for a pre-game performance.
There will be trophies for the victors in the Dakota Kid Pedal Pull, which starts at 9:30 a.m. Registration is at 9 a.m. and will be run in the parking lot north of the 3-on-3 hoops tournament.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the littlest Lynx fans will have some fun playing on inflatable midway. For $5, kids can run and jump and bounce to their heart’s content.
The Splitrock Council of the Knights of Columbus will stage their annual soccer challenge at 1 p.m., and the Brandon Edge has arranged their annual Punt, Pass & Kick competition for a 2 p.m. start. Both events are free and are for boys and girls ages 10-14.
From 5 to 6:15 p.m., the entertainment will be continuous at the Pigskin Classic tailgater, where the BV Athletic Boosters will serve up the always-popular Sunshine pork sandwiches and Pizza Ranch pizza. Concessions will also be available throughout the day.
The Pigskin Classic game ball will arrive via helicopter just moments before kickoff. The Boosters have selected Darrin DeBoer, a longtime Booster Club member and Lynx supporter, for the game ball delivery honors this year.
And as always, the Pigskin Classic’s halftime festivities include the “pig auction,” which is made possible by donations from the Bly Brothers (pig), Renner Locker (processing), and auctioneer Bob Julson.
