Only S.D. firewood allowed in state parks
By From staff reports

July 01. 2009 9:48AM
To try to combat the spread of a damaging harmful insect, South Dakota State Parks reminds campers that they can use wood only from South Dakota for campfires. Using firewood from out of state can transport the emerald ash borer.
People who camp at state parks and recreations areas must either bring their own South Dakota-grown firewood or buy firewood at the campground or from a nearby firewood dealer located within South Dakota. The best way to find out about firewood availability at a park is to contact the park directly.
The emerald ash borer is an exotic beetle discovered in southeastern Michigan in 2002. This tiny green bug is responsible for the death of tens of millions of ash trees in southeastern Michigan alone, with tens of millions more lost in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The beetle has not yet been detected in South Dakota.
