The Yankton Bucks avenged two earlier season losses to the Lynx boys at the Sept. 12 Augustana (cross country) Meet of Champions, and Haley Kruger broke the school record for the second time in three meets.

“Yankton paid us back for the two losses we handed them by beating us at this meet,” said Lynx Coach Larry Beesley. “Hopefully we can use this as some motivation to get them the next time we see them, which is the ESD meet in Yankton in the middle of October.”

Kruger, the girl’s team lead runner, broke the school record – her own – for the second time this season. The sophomore ran the 4,000-meter course in 16:13. That effort earned Kruger a sixth place finish in the field of 85 runners. She was the only award winner for the Lynx girls.

“It seems like a habit this year – Haley Kruger breaks another school record,” Beesley said.

The Brandon Valley boys had four boys medal at the Augustana meet. Senior Billy Brockmueller led the squad with his time of 17:49 for fifth place. Nathan Hauge came in eighth with a time of 17:59. Ben Schultz (18:46) and Austin Hogie (18:52) were 18th and 20th, respectively.

“The boys ran very well considering we did not come into this meet rested,” Beesley said. “A hard week of training and racing on a very difficult course led some to look a bit sluggish.”

Beesley said the team also got solid races from Zach VanEde (24th), Nick Wilde (32nd) and Dillon Waldera (20:06). “They stepped up and tried to fill in places to keep us as a top 2 team in the state and conference,” Beesley said.

In a field of nine teams, the Lynx girls placed sixth.

“The girls also trained through the meet and it showed more on them than the boys,” Beesley said. “We will continue to work through a couple more meets in preparation for the ESD.”

The Lynx compete Thursday at the Brookings Invite, beginning at 4 p.m., and this Saturday at the Roy Griak Invitational on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
