Brandon farm energy workshop scheduled for Feb. 17

An informational workshop on renewable energy and energy efficiency issues for South Dakota farms is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the Sioux Valley Energy conference room, Brandon. The goal of this workshop is to provide area farm businesses with information on the opportunities and challenges associated with managing energy costs related to improved efficiency and renewable energy systems.
Workshop topics include farm scale wind turbines, geothermal systems, infrared thermograph and energy audits to identify energy uses and losses, leasing your land to wind developers, and grants and incentives available for projects. The workshop will close with a panel of the workshop speakers available for farmers to ask their questions.
Workshop Speakers include Steve Wegman, SD Wind Energy Association, on leasing land for large wind projects and using infrared thermography to identify energy losses in buildings. SDSU Wind Application Center staff will discuss on farm energy uses (grain drying, heating, ventilation, etc.) and how a generator or changes can impact costs. Mark Vellinga, Renewable Energy SD, Sioux Falls, and Philip Lipetzsky, Green Energy Products, Springfield, Minn., will share cost and performance information on the small wind turbines they install.
Sioux Valley Energy staff Carol Roemen and Reggie Gassman will team up with Leuthold Plumbing and Heating to share information on geothermal systems for farm shops and residences. Shawn Miller, energy audit specialist, East River Electric, Madison, will discuss energy audit services available and their importance to farm energy efficiency and renewable energy. Dave Franssens, USDA Rural Development, Sioux Falls, will provide information on grant and loan programs for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The workshop will conclude with a speaker panel and dinner will be provided for $5 per person.
This workshop can provide information and contacts for farm owners to improve energy efficiency and/or install renewable energy.
The workshop is sponsored by the Minnehaha, Moody, and Lincoln Conservation Districts, the workshop host Sioux Valley Energy, Minnehaha Extension Service, SD 25x’25 Energy Alliance, and the South Dakota Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils.
