Brandon Valley held the Pierre Governors to just four points in the third quarter, while scoring a dozen en route to a 54-45 win Feb. 20 in Pierre.

“It was a good win on the road,” said Coach Mark Stadem. “I though the girls were unselfish in this game and it showed in our balance.”

The Lynx led by only two points after the first quarter, 11-9, but exploded for 16 points in the second to take a 27-20 lead into halftime. Brandon Valley continued their offensive dominance in the third, scoring 12 points to Pierre’s four for the 39-24 game after three quarters of play and the 54-45 ending.

Despite adding a notch to the win column, Stadem said the Lady Lynx need to play four complete quarters. “We need to do a little better job of playing with a big lead. Our intensity dropped off some in the fourth quarter and we need to learn not to let up,” he said.

Laura Hieb’s 15 points paced the Lynx offense, which turned in a 41 field goal performance, 18-44. Kate Swenson and Heidi Hoff also finished in double digits.
Swenson scored a dozen and Hoff accounted for 11. Jessi Peterson tossed in seven and Claire Choudek scored five.

The Lady Govs made 15-38 field goal attempts, 39 percent, and had limited opportunities at the free throw line, where they converted just 2 of 5. The Lynx cashed in on 15 of 25 free throws.

The Lynx also had the edge on the boards, 27-24. Hoff led the chare with five, while Madison Rozell, Choudek, Swenson, Peterson and Allison Koehn each had four.
Hoff provided five of Brandon Valley’s 11 assists; Pierre had five. Hieb and Hoff both picked off five of the team’s 12 total steals; Pierre had five.

Brandon Valley (9-10, 9-4 ESD) opened District 2AA play Monday at Sioux Falls Lincoln, losing 53-43. They'll host Yankton on Thursday in the third place title game. See the March 10 Challenger for a recap of Brandon Valley’s post-season action.
