Two Brandon Valley grapplers wrestled their way to a position on the podium at this year’s State Class A Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City.
Seniors Noah Halma (119 pounds) and Sam Seydel (189) each battled they way through the wrestlebacks to compete for seventh place titles in their respective weight classes. Halma won a narrow 2-1 decision over Grayson Neuharth of Aberdeen Central to win the seventh place title match, while Seydel had to settle for eighth place after suffering a 7-0 decision loss to Huron’s Matt Halter.
“Both Noah and Sam went out on a solid note to place at the state,” said head coach Jeff Duncanson. “It’s a good way for them to cap off their senior year.”
Halma pinned Pierre’s Chance Scott at the 3-minute, 28-second mark in his opening round, but then fell to Morgan Russell of Rapid City Stevens by a 10-2 major decision.
Halma won three straight matches in the wrestlebacks en route to his seventh place finish. He pinned Drew Brown of Harrisburg and Josh Satlak of Sioux Falls Roosevelt. In the title match, the Lynx escaped the mat with a 2-1 decision over Neuharth to win seventh place.
“Noah had a good tournament,” Duncanson said. “Anytime you place at the state tournament, there’s no regrets.”
Seydel opened the tournament against Even Murphy of Dell Rapids. Murphy posted a 17-0 technical fall win over Seydel. In the wrestlebacks the Lynx senior decisioned Kade Binegar (Pierre) 7-2 before he lost a 13-3 major decision to Lennox’s Austin Lynde. In the seventh place match, Huron’s Matt Halter won by a 7-0 decision.
In addition to Halma and Seydel, the Lynx qualified four others for the state show. Eighth grader Adam Presler (103) lost his opening match to Keaton Ohlsen (R.C. Stevens), a 4-2 decision. The Brandon Valley wrestler then posted an 11-4 decision victory over Mitchell’s Alex Herrick before his tournament-ending loss to Sisseton’s Darin Peterson, who edged Presler by a 1-0 decision.
Ryan Angerhofer (130) lost both of his state tournament matches, the first a 16-0 technical fall loss to Caleb Buysse of Dell Rapids. He was then pinned in 58 seconds by Pierre’s Jacob Wagoner.
Nate Monger (135) dropped a 7-1 decision to Lance Habeck of Aberdeen Central in his first round of the tournament. Monger rebounded by shouldering Watertown’s Jeremiah Streckfuss with just one second left in regulation, 5:59. He then lost a 9-0 major decision to Sioux Falls Washington’s Sam Schultz.
Garrett Bratland (171) was pinned in 3:17 in his opening round by Mitchell’s Jordan Reiner. In the wrestlebacks, Bratland secured a 10-9 decision over Trevor Pearson of Sioux Falls Roosevelt before losing to Terrance Maier of Pierre by technical fall (18-2).
“Adam, Nate and Garrett all made it to the second round wrestlebacks, so they were one match away from placing,” Duncanson said. “That’s invaluable state tournament experience, and hopefully it will motivate them in the off-season and give them some valuable experience for next year.”
The Sturgis Scoopers ran away with the Class A team trophy. Rapid City Stevens and Vermillion were second and third, respectively. The Lynx were 21st out of 32 squads.
