Robbins sets three school swim team records
Spencer Robbins, a 2006 graduate of Brandon Valley High School, set three Luther College school records at the Liberal Arts Championships, hosted by Principia College, located in Elsah , Ill., Feb. 18-20.
Robbins posted a new mark in the 100 backstroke, swimming the first leg of the 400-medley relay (3:28.25) that placed second, during the first day of competition. Robbins split of 0:52.18, broke the old mark of 0:53.48, set by Bryan Perrott Feb. 16, 2007.
Robbins also swam on the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.94), the 800 freestyle relay (6:58.59) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.69) that all placed first. Luther’s time in the 400 freestyle relay was a new Crafton Pool record.
Individually, Robbins placed first in the 500 freestyle (4:42.58), second in the 200 butterfly (1:53.09) and third in the 100 butterfly (50.55). His times in the 200 and 100 butterfly were also new school records. He held the old marks for both of these events of 1:53.13 and 0:51.34 respectively, set in 2009.
Robbins is the son of Jack and Peri Robbins of Brandon.
JV girls end season with 7-7 mark
Brandon Valley’s junior varsity girls ended their 2009-10 season with a 7-7 mark by posting three wins and two losses last month.
On Feb. 22, the Lady Lynx dropped a 50-41 Eastern South Dakota Conference loss at Brookings.
“We played extremely hard and I give Brookings a lot of credit in this game. They executed on both ends … (and) we ran out of energy at the end,” said coach Mark Schlekeway.
The Lynx shot 28 percent (15-53) from the field and converted 8-16 free throws. Kasey Presler led the Lynx offense with 11 and Andrea Hanson netted 10. Kari Pierson and Allison Koehn each tossed in eight.
Presler and Koehn combined for 37 of Brandon Valley’s 58 points in their 58-57 victory over Pierre on Feb. 20. Presler scored 19 and Koehn had 18. Briana Rogiers added 11 to the win.
The Lynx turned in a 38 percent field goal effort, 18-48, and hit 20-of-35 free throws (57 percent).
After trailing the Lady Govs throughout the game, Presler hit a game-changing 3-pointer with 15 ticks left on the clock. Rogiers solidified the win by stealing a full-court inbound pass by Pierre and took it the length of the court, capping off the play with a lay-up and the 58-55 advantage with eight seconds to play. Pierre missed a half-court shot at the buzzer to give the Lynx the win.
“It is hard to describe this game if you weren’t there,” Schlekeway said. “I was so proud of how the girls fought their way back into the game. It just shows the character of this team.”
Sioux Falls Washington pummeled the Lynx, 65-40, in non-conference action on Feb. 16.
“We have to give Washington a lot of credit here, as they shot the ball extremely well,” Schlekeway said. “We definitely played hard but it seemed that all the bounces went to Washington.”
The Lynx, led by Presler’s nine points and Koehn’s eight, finished the night with a 32 percent field goal performance, 13-41. The Lynx picked up 10 of 17 free throws.
Presler, Dykstra and Pierson each had four of the team’s 25 rebounds; the Warriors had 33 total boards.
Brandon Valley’s post play proved to be too much for the Rapid City Central Cobblers, as the Lynx defeated their West River guests 51-45 on Feb. 15.
“We did a nice job of getting the ball into the post,” said Schlekeway, whose team shot 45 percent, 19-42, and connected on 12-16 free throws. “It was a physical game and our defensive intensity was the difference.”
Koehn netted 19 points for Brandon Valley, while Hanson finished with 10 points.
While the Cobblers shot 58 percent from the floor, 19-33, they converted just 6 of 14 free throws.
The Lynx out-rebounded their guests, 28-23, and were led by Koehn’s seven and six from both Hanson and Elyssa Ellis.
Brandon Valley squeaked out a one-point victory, 47-46, against Aberdeen Central on Feb. 5.
“Overall, this was our best game of the year,” Schlekeway said. “We defended well and executed our offense. Aberdeen was a team that beat us handily up in Aberdeen, so it was great to see the girls respond the way they did on our home floor.”
Hanson paced Brandon Valley with 17 points and Koehn scored 10. The Lynx shot 34 percent from the field, 14-41, and were 19-for-28 at the charity stripe, a 68 percent effort. The Eagles connected on 21-50 from the floor (42 percent) and had limited opportunities at the free throw line where they made 4 of 7.
The Lynx out-worked Aberdeen on the boards, 24-21. Dykstra had six, Koehn grabbed five and Hanson had four.
Knights nip BV soph’s by two
Sioux Falls O’Gorman notched a two-point win over the visiting sophomores from Brandon Valley on Feb. 23. The Knights won 43-41.
Coach Tim Sylliaasen said the Lynx played 28 minutes of great basketball before things turned awry.
“They did everything right,” Sylliaasen said. “The last four minutes were not so good.”
With 10 seconds left to play, Dylan Rock swished a pair of free throws to tie the game at 41-41. The Knights then took the ball down the floor and scored the game-winning basket at the buzzer.
Chase Marso scored 14 points and Rock had 13 to pace the Lynx offense.
Knights defeat Lynx by 20
Brandon Valley’s junior varsity boys suffered a 20-point loss at the hands of Sioux Falls O’Gorman on Feb. 23. The Knights won 44-24.
“We were fortunate to play this game today against a better team,” said coach Craig Nelson. “They exposed a lot of our weaknesses and showed a lot of our underclassmen what they are going to have to get better at in order to help us at the varsity level next year.”
After a rough start to the game, the Lynx turned in a solid 28 minutes. “I can’t fault our effort after the first four minutes, but we need 32 minutes versus the better team,” Nelson said.
Ben Kramer and Isaac Hanson paced the Lynx with six and five points, respectively. Sam Rall had six rebounds and Hanson contributed three assists.

Brandon Valley’s junior varsity boys wrapped up their 2009-10 season with a 43-38 win on their home court against the Mitchell Kernels. The Lynx end their season with a 7-13 record.
“We did some really good things tonight on both ends,” said coach Craig Nelson. “We worked to get each other open and were very unselfish with the ball. When we do some of those things it makes me very excited thinking about what these guys could do next year if they put in the effort.”
Brock Wickett led the scoring with 12 points. Isaac Hanson and Tyler Schlotman added nine and eight points, respectively.
The Lynx were all over the boards, with Sam Rall and Ben Kramer each hauling in eight. Hanson and Schlotman both grabbed four and Wickett had three rebounds and five assists to his credit.
“The best thing tonight was, even after a win, hearing the guys talk about how many things they could still do a lot better,” Nelson said. “If they work every day over the next eight months with the sense of urgency they had in this game, next year could be very special for them.”
