West, Keegan achieve 2nd degree black belts

Dedication and training reap rewards.
And for two Hoover’s Martial Arts students from Brandon, dedication and training paid off Feb. 5 as Nate Keegan and Conrad West tested for and achieved their 2nd degree black belt.
Once has student has achieved 1st Degree Black belt status, they must undergo a minimum of two years of training and a number of testings on forms, weapons, sparring and board breaks to reach the 2nd degree black belt level.
In the American Taekwondo Association there are nine color belt levels. The color belt levels are the building blocks to learn the basics needed to reach the1st black belt level. Once at the black belt level, the black belt training continues through nine levels, with each level progressively becoming more difficult and demanding.
Both Keegan and West are state champion titleholders in their respective age categories. West is also an instructor at Hoover’s Martial Arts in Brandon.
Sheldon Tournament
Ten students from Hoover's Martial Arts - Brandon braved the cold and snow to compete in the Sheldon, Iowa Regional Tournament on Jan. 16. The Brandon students faired well amongst the approximately 400 competitors from across the region to bring home multiple awards. All levels from white belt to 4th degree black belts, as well as 4-year-olds through adults were among the competitors.
