In their brief 22-minute meeting March 1, the Brandon city council OK’d the first reading of Ordinance No. 469, which deals with careless, reckless and exhibition driving.
The update to the ordinance now gives Brandon Police authority to issue citations for careless, reckless and exhibition driving in private parking lots.
“It’s basically just cleaning up the language, especially when talking about exhibition, careless and reckless driving,” said Dave Kull, Brandon chief of police. “When it was written (1974) it allowed for enforcement on highways and parking lots at the schools. The problem with that ordinance is if we have, say someone in a car burning tires in a parking lot of a private business, we had no way to make an arrest.”
The amended ordinance now gives local police authority to write citations for reckless, careless, exhibition driving in private parking lots.
