Eight South Dakota high school students, including Brandon Valley’s Melissa Johnston, shared their talents and the works of great poets while competing for the state title at the statewide Poetry Out Loud recitation contest on March 15 in Sioux Falls.
Poetry Out Loud, a national arts education program, starts in the classroom and encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. South Dakota’s program is administered by the South Dakota Arts Council with help from South Dakotans for the Arts and South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
The state finalists were selected from a preliminary round, in which students submitted videos of themselves reciting their poems. The videos were judged by the same judges who will evaluate the state contest.
The finalists selected include Stacy Burkhalter, Brookings High School; Johnston, Brandon Valley High School; Jessica Skogen, Harrisburg High School; Derick Schultz, Hitchcock-Tulare High School; Wiyaka His Horse is Thunder, Little Wound High School; Nellie Two Elk, Todd County High School; Ruth Haile, Sioux Falls Lincoln High School; and Jenae Olson, Sisseton High School.
The contest will begin at 1 p.m. Monday in the auditorium at Edison Middle School, 2101 Southwest Ave., Sioux Falls.
