Brandon Valley came out victorious in their third meeting on the hardwood with the Yankton Bucks.

And this time, the 51-42 victory was more significant than before, as it advanced the Lynx boys to Friday’s District 2AA title game.

In the season opener, Yankton topped the Lynx by six, 51-45, and a month later, the Bucks posted a 52-46 victory.

But the March 2 meeting between the two Eastern South Dakota Conference opponents went the way of the Lynx.

“The guys really played their guts out,” said Brent Deckert, head coach of the Lynx, who take an 8-13 record into Friday’s game with Sioux Falls Lincoln. “They played so hard it was nice to see them come out with a win.”

The 9-12 Bucks, who hosted the game in the Summit Activities Center, quickly turned two solid defensive possessions into four points. That would be all the offense Yankton could muster in the first quarter, while the Lynx put up six points for the 6-4 lead after a quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Brandon Valley took advantage of Yankton’s offensive drought and reeled off nine consecutive points to post a 9-4 lead. The Lynx outscored the Bucks 11-7 in the second quarter en route to the 20-14 halftime lead.

Yankton opened the second half with a Robert Walsh lay-up, but Brandon Valley’s Tyler Trevino swished back-to-back three’s to help maintain the edge. The Bucks didn’t give in easily, however, as Ryan Berry and Walsh each hit from 3-point territory to climb within two of the Lynx, 26-24.

Lynx senior Bryan Brown halted Yankton’s short-lived 6-0 run with a easy lay-up, but Walsh answered back with the last of his 3-point buckets to pull the Bucks within one, 28-27. At the quarter’s end, the Lynx held a 31-29 advantage.

Brandon Valley opened the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run, and that proved to be more than the Bucks could overcome.

Despite possessing the lead for most of the game, Deckert said the postseason win didn’t come easily.

“Nothing was easy in this game,” Deckert said. “Postseason games are always more enjoyable because it's a race to win two before you lose two in AA basketball. Anytime you get in the postseason you have to find a way to get easy baskets and also avoid giving them up. I’m not sure how many lay-ups we got but I thought we did a great job of closing off the paint for Yankton.”

Brandon Valley produced 20 points in the paint, while Yankton was limited to 14.
The Lynx made 16-38 from the field (42.1 percent) and Yankton hit 15-38 (39.5 percent). At the line, Brandon Valley converted 14-21 (66.7 percent), while the Bucks capitalized on 7-11 (63.6 percent).

“We've been killed all year with our free throw shooting and turnovers, but we closed the game in the second half with only three turnovers versus some Yankton pressure,” Deckert said. “Any team turns from an average team to a great team with numbers like that.”

Four Lynx finished in double digits Tuesday night. Brown led the charge with 14, while Austin Sumner scored a dozen. Trevino and Ben Schultz each accounted for 11.

Yankton was led by Walsh’s 16 points; Berry contributed eight.

The two ESD teams matched up on the boards with 22 rebounds apiece. Brown, Sumner, Schultz and Derek Fischer all had five rebounds for the Lynx. Walsh matched that effort for the Bucks.
The Lynx turned the ball over 13 times to Yankton’s 11.
