Two quarters of cold shooting in Thursday’s District 2AA elimination game halted the Lady Lynx from advancing in post-season play. Brandon Valley scored just six points in the first quarter and were contained to four in the third, as the Yankton Gazelles defeated the Lynx 43-37. Yankton advances to the Region 1AA tourney, where they were scheduled to face Sioux Falls Roosevelt Saturday. The winner of that game earns a berth to this week’s Class AA state tournament in Huron.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well again,” summed up Mark Stadem, head coach of the 10-12 Lady Lynx. “You’re not going to win many ball games shooting 28 percent from the field.”

The Lynx converted just 11 of 40 shot attempts. And while the Gazelles, whom the Lynx defeated twice in the regular season, didn’t perform much better (14-of-45, 31 percent), they did enough to garner the win.

Laura Ekeren (15 points) and Chloe Cornemann (12 points) combined to score Yankton’s first eight points, guiding the Gazelles to a 10-6 lead by the first quarter’s end. Kate Swenson put up Brandon Valley’s first two points early in the quarter. The Lynx didn’t score again until senior guard Laura Hieb swished the net from 3-point territory with two minutes to play, and Claire Choudek hit a free throw for the 6-10 score.

The Lynx offense produced 16 points in the second stanza, enough to carry a two-point edge into the half, 22-20. Yankton’s Ekeren opened the quarter with a 3-pointer before the Lynx offense came to life and reeled off seven points to tie the game at 13-13 with 6:11 to play in the half. Brandon Valley took the lead when Heidi Hoff hit pay dirt on a determined drive to the basket. The Lynx increased their lead to four when Jessi Peterson hit a pair of free throws, but Yankton kept it close by trading baskets with the Lynx for the 22-20 score at the half.

The Lynx put up three quick points in the third before the Gazelles knotted the game at 25-25 on Ekeren’s second 3-pointer of the game. Yankton took the lead on a Jayna Sprecht jumper and Cornemann drained a three with just seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Gazelles the 31-26 advantage.

The Gazelles maintained a little breathing room through the first half of the fourth quarter as the Lynx inched their way back. With just two minutes to play, Claire Choudek tied the game at 35-35 when she drained a pair of free throws, but that would be all the scoring for the Lynx until Hoff was sent to the line with 15 seconds to play. The Lynx sophomore hit both to climb within two, 37-39. But in the final seconds of the game, Yankton went 6-for-6 at the free throw line to seal the victory.

Hoff’s dozen points led the scoring for Brandon Valley, while Hieb, Choudek and Swenson all contributed six points. Peterson added four.

At the charity stripe, the Lynx connected on 13-of-23 (57 percent). Yankton converted 10-12 (83 percent).

Yankton had the advantage on the boards, 34-23. Hoff grabbed six and Swenson had five. Choudek and Madison Rozell pulled in four apiece.

“We played well defensively and did a good job on the boards,” Stadem said. “I’m proud of the girls’ effort in the game.”

Peterson had four of the team’s eight steals; Yankton registered six in the game. Brandon Valley had seven turnovers in the game to Yankton’s 16.
