June 15. 2010 6:00AM
The Ode family will host an open house at their dairy, Royalwood Dairy, near Brandon, on Saturday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors can roam the dairy farm and enjoy a free pancake breakfast. Guided tours by the Ode family will be held at 9:30 and 11 a.m. An activity area will also be available for kids visiting the dairy farm.
In 2008 and 2009, the Ode family hosted an open house for their dairy. This will be the third time the Ode family has opened their doors to the public.
“We appreciate the Ode family’s wiliness to open up their farm to their neighbors and folks from surrounding communities,” said Steve Dick, executive director for Ag United. “It is a great opportunity for people to see firsthand how committed South Dakota Dairy farmers are to their cows.”
Royalwood Dairy is located 5 miles south of Brandon on SD Highway 11 and 1/2 mile east on 266th Street.
Dairy is the sixth largest agricultural business in South Dakota, generating $319 million each year. About 390 dairy farms in South Dakota produce milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy foods for residents of the state, and across the U.S. and the world. About 99 percent of all South Dakota dairies are family-owned.
A recent report showed that South Dakota dairies are leading the U.S. in environmental stewardship and production efficiency. According to South Dakota Cooperative Extension Dairy Specialist Alvaro Garcia’s analysis, South Dakota ranked 22nd in the nation in overall milk produced and 24th in the total number of dairy cows. However, the state is fifth in milk production per person, showing that South Dakota dairy producers are some of the most efficient in the nation, and are producing more milk while minimizing the impact on the environment. The U.S. dairy industry announced last year its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that result from the production of fluid milk by 25 percent before 2020, or the equivalent of removing more than 1.25 million passenger cars from the road every year.
