New picnic shelter ready for use at Pioneer Park

Visitors to Pioneer Park can dine in the shade, thanks to a new picnic shelter in the north side neighborhood park.
The shelter has a roof and open sides and has room for six to 10 picnic tables, according to city officials.
“It’s similar to the ones that are at McHardy Park,” said Rollie Hoeke, Brandon’s director of public works. The shelter is wired for electricity. “It’s got kind of a little shelf area in there,” Hoeke said, perfect for holding potluck dishes.
Shannon Crowe lives in the Keystone Apartments and takes her three kids to Pioneer Park often “to play and run around,” she said.
Her family has gone to McHardy Park for family picnics, though. But with the new picnic shelter, she hopes to have her family picnics at Pioneer Park. She likes the convenience of being able to walk to the park instead of having to drive, she said.
City Administrator Bryan Read said $15,000 was budgeted for the shelter but the exact cost isn’t yet known, as bills are still coming in.
“The city thought there was a need and some usage that wasn’t being addressed,” he said about the decision to add the shelter.
Hoeke said the shelter is the first upgrade at Pioneer Park since restrooms were added three or four years ago.
