Opening of CTA expands student learning opportunities
July 27. 2010 3:25PM
We are beginning to hear the beat of drums and the sound of horns. The Brandon Valley Marching Lynx have begun to put together their competition show for this year and that is a sure sign that the beginning of school can’t be too far behind.
School begins on Aug. 17 this year, which generally parallels the start date of other schools participating in the new Career Technical Academy in Sioux Falls. (Just as an aside, the school board will be reviewing the start date for 2011-12 with an eye to moving it a few days later.)
The school board will get a “sneak peak” tour of the new CTE facility in early August. While the Sioux Falls School District built the new Academy, it will be filled with students from virtually all of the surrounding districts. Here at Brandon Valley we purchased 30 slots for this year and all have been filled. The CTE Academy allows us and the other partner schools to offer a wide variety of career-oriented classes that we could never offer on our own. This is a fabulous opportunity for our students.
The Sioux Falls web site has this to say about the CTE Academy:
“The Sioux Falls School District operates the CTE Academy to provide students an opportunity for hands-on, advanced training in a variety of career areas. Academy programs are available to 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, while introductory level courses are available to ninth grade students at their regular high school. A student attends the CTE Academy for a two-hour block during their regular daily schedule.
The student’s enrollment remains at their home high school and students continue all extra curricular activities through their home high school. Optional transportation for students is provided by the district.
“Programs offered at the academy include: Media Production, Health Science, Biomedical Sciences, Carpentry, Hospitality and Tourism, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Auto Tech, Auto Body, Manufacturing, Welding, and Human Services. All programs are state CTE approved courses that fulfill certain graduation requirements.”
Brandon Valley will continue to offer entry-level classes in Brandon and some of our programs that are not duplicated at the Academy. We are excited to be able to expand the learning opportunities that are available to our students this year.
