July 29. 2010 6:00AM
The State Board of Education approved three new programs and two program expansions for South Dakota’s technical institutes during a meeting on July 27.

Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls will launch two new programs this fall, and Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown was approved for one new program in fall 2011.

Land Surveying Science Technology and Insurance and Financial Services were approved at Southeast, and Custom Paint and Fabrication was approved for Lake Area.

A program expansion was also approved for Lake Area Tech. Students in the Drafting Technology program will now be able to choose from more specialization options.

The Board of Education gave Mitchell Technical Institute permission to add a second year to its Power Sports program this fall. The expansion will give students more hands-on experience with marine technology.

The state’s other technical institute, Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City, was approved for a facilities bond during the meeting.
