Martial arts students achieve new rankings

Several students of Hoover’s Martial Arts in Brandon reached new rankings this summer.
Six students tested for their 1st degree black belt this summer. Achieving the new ranking are Tate Evans, Nick Wagley, Al Kirkeby, Anna Boomsma, Chris Verhey and Cody Welsh.
Each of the students began as white belts and completed various color belt testing that includes forms, board breaks and sparring. They were required to complete 10 color belt levels to attain the 1st degree level.
4th degree black belt
Instructor Jordan Mitzel successfully tested and obtained the high rank of 4th degree black belt.
Over a three-year period, Mitzel completed a series of testing from physical fitness requirements to forms, boards, sparring and weapons. At the World competition in Little Rock Ark., in June he successfully completed the most difficult and final testing to reach the 4th degree level.
Mitzel has been an instructor at the Brandon location for four years and has 10 years of Tae Kwon Do experience. He is a student at Augustana College majoring in sports medicine.
2010 state champions
The South Dakota State Champion Titles have been awarded this year to two Brandon students. Conrad West earned two state champion titles in the 14-16 year-old boys division for forms and Sparring. West is an instructor at Hoover's Martial Arts in Brandon.
Ethan Clow also earned two state champion titles in the 11-13 year-old boy’s division for forms and weapons.
To earn state champion titles, students earn points at tournaments and must place first, second or third at the tournament to earn points. The top point earner in the competition year is then awarded the state champion title for that state.
Sioux Falls Victory Tournament
Twenty students represented Brandonat the Sioux Falls Victory Tournament on July 31, from which they brought home 38 trophies.
Students from Tiny Tigers (age 4) through adults and white belts through 2nd degree black belts competed at this tournament.

Sparring: First place - Mason Padgett, Kane Tigner, Jack Bommersbach, Kevin Gillespie, Kendra Kuehn, Jacob Boomsma, Dylan Kirkeby; second place - Noah Safranski, Ethan Cushing, Will Bommersbach, Greg Beaner, Joel Quanbeck; third place - Maxwell Kane, Genna Sheriff, Elizabeth Boomsma, Tanner Rakebrandt.
Weapons: First place - Elizabeth Boomsma, Kane Tigner, Kevin Gillespie, Kendra Kuehn.
