School year is off to great start at Brandon Valley

The school year is off to a great start! Principals report that students and teachers hit the road running and are working hard at making this another successful year for learning at Brandon Valley. Enrollment is up between 60 and 70 students, which is somewhat short of our projections. The tenacious recession continues to contribute to a slow housing market.
Fred Assam Elementary has shown the largest enrollment growth and will be 300 or more during the first semester. Based on Sioux Falls Planning estimates, it would take only about 400 single family houses to completely fill Fred Assam Elementary. At the current slowed pace, that probably means at least several years, but if housing starts begin to pick up the school could be full sooner. The district will need to plan for more elementary space sometime in the not too distant future.
I visited football and volleyball practices last week and numbers are strong. Soccer, tennis, golf, cross country and competitive cheer and dance are also in season and the teams are looking forward to the tests that come with competition. The Marching Lynx are putting the finishing touches on their 2010 show that was unveiled at the annual Marching and Melon Madness event on Monday. It is great to see so many students involved in activities and it will be fun to follow them throughout the fall season. Students that are in activities are more engaged in school in general and that pays huge dividends on the academic side of the equation.
The Pigskin Classic is coming up Sept. 11 when the Lynx will have their home opener in football. The Brandon Valley Athletic Booster Club does a great job organizing this annual event and it is a time for the whole community to get involved with the school. I’ll see you there!
