First-game jitters obvious in Friday’s 3-0 loss

First-game jitters were apparent in Brandon Valley’s 3-0 season-opening loss at Sioux Falls Washington Friday night. The Warriors won 21-25, 19-25 and 15-25.
“We definitely had first game jitters, and you could tell we lacked experience having new varsity level players,” said Lindsey Smith, head coach of the Lady Lynx. “Our team has a lot of sophomores on it, and they are just inexperienced, so they were very nervous.”
But Smith said first game jitters were no excuse for mental errors, such as in the net calls and missed serves.
“Washington was the better team,” Smith said. “It was a good starting point to see where our team is at, and where we need to continue to work on.”
The Warriors posted an eight-point lead before the Brandon Valley players settled their nerves and rallied behind some clutch serves by Miranda Schroeder and a string of Washington errors to get within two, 19-21. The two teams traded the next four points before the Warriors served out the win.
The Lynx put up three points before the Warriors got on the board in game two. Brandon Valley’s last lead of the game was 9-7 before Washington took the lead for good. The Lynx came as close as four, but couldn’t overtake their hosts.
Washington led from start to finish in game three, jumping out to an early 3-7 lead. Brandon Valley got within three points of the Warriors before they rolled to the 15-25 win.
For the Lynx, senior Robyn Moss and junior Heidi Hoff led Brandon Valley’s net attack with five kills apiece.
Janaye Sjoberg had 13 set assists and Jessi Peterson picked up 19 digs.
Miranda Schroeder recorded three ace serves in the match.
On the defensive side of the net, Moss had three blocks to her credit.
For Washington, Becca Ryan had 30 digs and Payton Zwart 11 kills.
Emma Hanson had six blocks for the Warriors, while Lacey Lewis had 15 set assists and Shelby Brunick 11. Zwart and Ryan each had four ace serves.
“I am still excited and staying positive. It was one game, and the first game for that matter. I am not worried, I believe in the girls I have and I know they can do it. It will happen as soon as they start believing in themselves,” Smith said. “All of these regular season games really don't matter, as they are games to get us ready for districts, then it matters.”
The Lynx travel to Sioux Falls Christian Thursday and Huron on Saturday before returning to their home court on Sept. 7, when Sioux Falls O’Gorman pays a visit to Brandon Valley.
