Lynx harriers open season with strong performances at O’G Invite

Brandon Valley’s cross country teams each got off to a good start Friday at the O’Gorman Invite, with both squads finishing second out of a field of six teams. The Lynx boys were edged by Brookings, 22-34, while the Lady Lynx finished behind Aberdeen Central, 21-44.
“Overall, the teams looked very good,” said Lynx head coach Beesley. “(We had) a lot of solid performances with six individuals getting awards and two team runners-up in an extremely competitive field.”
Nathan Hauge kept a quick pace to claim second in the boy’s varsity race that featured 42 runners. Hauge clocked in at 13:35. Zach Van Ede also ran a strong race to finish seventh. He covered the 4,000-meter course in 14:13. Nick Wilde, Dillon Waldera and Derek Swanson were the 12th through 14th runners. Wilde turned in a run of 14:15, while Waldera and Swanson finished in 14:32 and 14:37, respectively.
“The boys had tough competition,” Beesley said, noting the Brookings Bobcats and Yankton Bucks each placed four in the top 10.
“I knew Brookings would be tough and they ran very well,” Beesley said. “Our top six guys ran very well for their first race of the season.”
Beesley said there’s still room for improvement in the boy’s program.
“We still need to continue to work in practice to improve as a team,” he said. “We are only as good as our last scorer, so we need to keep pushing during workouts and during the races. As defending ESD champs, we need to get that top seven to have a smaller gap in order for us to be in the title hunt.”
The Lady Lynx were led by Kasey Presler’s run of 12:50, which landed her in fourth place out of 47 runners. Shelby Rahn, Haley Kruger and Courtney Gross paced themselves to 12th, 13th and 15th place finishes, respectively. Rahn ran the two-mile course in 13:25, while Kruger and Gross completed the run in 13:27 and 13:44.
Earmarked as one of the top three Class AA teams in the state, Aberdeen Central’s first place finish came as no surprise to Beesley. But the coach was equally impressed with the Brandon Valley girls team performance.
“We still have some work to do before October, but the girls really ran well as a team. I can’t remember the last time a BV girl’s team finished ahead of Yankton,” he said. “We are very capable of seeing some improvement as a team. As always in cross country, we need solid races from all seven to improve in team scores.”
Brandon Valley placed two junior varsity boys in the top 10. Mitchell Selken and Adam Presler picked up sixth and ninth places, respectively.
“These boys ran well also. I am really pleased with how this group is coming around,” Beesley said. With Selken and Presler winning medals, Beesley said, “This showed that they are improving each week and will be looked upon to fill varsity spots over the next few years.”
Seventh grader Jacob Hegland also turned in a surprise run, Beesley said. He was 12th out of 77 runners, posting at time of 12:36.
Macy Jo Murren was the lone girls JV runner to finish in the top 10. She was ninth with her time of 11:03.
