Six turnovers – five interceptions and a fumble – were key factors in Brandon Valley’s 27-13 season-opening loss Saturday at Sturgis.

“We really moved the ball well in between the 20s, but once we got in the red zone, we couldn’t score,” said head coach Chad Garrow. Garrow said the Lynx were inside the red zone four times but couldn’t come up with the crucial points. “When I look back at it, we moved the ball pretty well.”

The Lynx came close to scoring on their opening possession of the game before Cody Taggart dropped a sure touchdown from quarterback Sam Rall. Brandon Valley’s game plan continued to go awry, as Rall threw five interceptions and Sturgis’ Kole Simmons stripped and recovered a Rall fumble.

The two teams exchanged turnovers after the Scoopers’ opening score before Brandon Valley’s Dylan Niklason caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Rall to give the Lynx their only lead of the night, 7-6.

The Scoopers came back and took a 12-7 lead on a 3-yard run by Bryan Cooley before Clint Wilson put his rushing abilities to work in the second half. Wilson scored twice in the second half on a 26-yard touchdown run and a 7-yard run to give Sturgis a 27-7 lead, which they wouldn’t relinquished the rest of the game.

Cooley scored the final Sturgis TD on a 30-yard pass from Joey Olson.

Brandon Valley’s second TD of the game was a 3-yard pass play from Rall to Trevor Crow.

For Brandon Valley, Rall was 19-for-33 for 173 yards. The senior QB also rushed for 39 yards in nine carries.

On the receiving end of Rall’s completions was Brock Wickett, who caught two passes for 20 yards. Casey Lee picked up 61 yards in his seven receptions, and Trevor Crow, who scored one of Brandon Valley’s two touchdowns, gained 20 yards in his three catches.

Niklason, who scored Brandon Valley’s other TD, latched on to two of Rall’s passes for 30 yards and Taggart was credited with 21 yards in four receptions.

Brandon Valley’s ground game was led by Wickett, who picked up 44 yards in four runs. Crow added 11 yards to the stats in his four jaunts, and Adam Guthmiller picked up two yards in his single rush.

Jeff Maassen and Kyle Peterson were Brandon Valley’s defensive leaders. Maassen recorded 15 tackles and assisted on eight others, while Peterson had five tackles and five assists to his credit.

“It was tougher defensively because they were always in control of the game,” Garrow said.

For Sturgis, Wilson finished the night with 172 yards on 31 carries. The Scoopers had 313 total yards, including197 rushing yards.

The Lynx take their 0-1season mark to Yankton Friday for their first ESD Conference game. Yankton blanked Rapid City Central 9-0 in their season opener.

“It was kind of a defensive game from what I saw on the tapes,” Garrow said. “We expect a hard-fought game. They’re always solid defensively; we definitely can’t turn the ball over like we did last week.”
