For several years, Kelsey Plummer of Brandon, has been committed to the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of South Dakota. Her goal has been to raise enough money to pay for or “adopt” a very ill child’s wish. So, she has placed “collection jars” at eight locations in the Brandon area where citizens are encouraged to make donations to help make a wish come true. This year, Plummer, with the help of the citizens of Brandon and surrounding area, reached her goal of raising $5,000 to pay for a child’s wish.
The money raised allowed 9-year-old Allison and her family to travel to Walt Disney World in May and experience many magical moments and memories together. Allison suffered with an illness described as “Spastic Quadriplegic-Global Development.” This illness is a loss of sensation and mobility in both the upper and lower body. Spastic quadriplegia occurs when all four limbs are affected with increased tone, decreased movements and brisk reflexes.
Today, more than 80 percent of the Make-A-Wish® children survive their painful illnesses. However, Allison was one who did not. She passed away quite suddenly and expectedly on July 23. Allison’s family will never forget their trip to Walt Disney World. And, Kelsey will never forget the experience she had meeting Allison and knowing that together, she and the Brandon community helped make a dream come true. Kelsey is continuing with her goal, as she’d like to “adopt” the wish of another child.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® grants wishes to children, 2-1/2 to 18, suffering with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the experience with hope, strength and joy. All money raised in stays in South Dakota for South Dakota children.
