BV Pigskin Classic: 10 years and going strong
September 09. 2010 9:54AM
It will be a red, white and blue day in Brandon this Saturday, as the 10th annual Pigskin Classic not only puts Lynx athletic teams in the spotlight for a day, but also pays tribute to the ninth anniversary of 9/11.
The heart-wrenching terrorist attack on American soil in 2001 will be remembered in an assortment of ways on Saturday. A patriotic flag display sponsored by First Premier Bank will decorate the Lynx Athletic Complex and prior to kickoff, a football field-sized American flag will be carried onto the field as the Symphonic Band plays “God Bless America” and the “Star Spangled Banner.”
“This will be a celebration for fire, police, EMTs and military personnel,” said Randy Marso, Brandon Valley activities director. “And since it’s the anniversary of 9/11, all of the athletes will wear red, white and blue wrist bands in tribute to those people.”
And that’s a lot of wrist bands, as hundreds of Brandon Valley athletes will be in competition throughout the day. The girls tennis team continues their second day of the Lynx Team Tennis Invite. The cross country teams will run at the Champions Invite in Sioux Falls and the boys golf team will be in competition in Brookings. Brandon Valley’s club soccer teams will host Spearfish, the Lynx volleyball team faces Aberdeen Central, and that night, Brandon Valley takes to the grid iron against the Golden Eagles from Aberdeen.
“We have a lot of home events this year. We just wanted to have as many as we could,” Marso said. “It’s for the benefit of the kids, because they all enjoy being part of the Pigskin Classic.”
The recognition of 9/11 and planning of the daylong event is an annual project of the Brandon Valley Athletic Boosters. It’s their biggest fundraising activity of the school year, and proceeds from the day provides perks for Brandon Valley athletic programs. Some of those perks have included the purchase of uniforms and warm-ups, tents, a flat screen TV for the high school commons, murals in the activity center, the wall of recognition, student scholarships and more.
“The school is very helpful in letting us call that game our game,” said Booster president Bob Logan.
Planning of the event is about a six-month process, but now 10 years strong, Marso said the event “is at a point where it kind of runs itself.”
“It goes really smooth,” he said.
That’s due to a long list of dedicated parent volunteers who step up to the challenge year after year.
“Each sport is responsible for something that they have to line up, whether it’s ordering food, organizing the road race or whatever - it’s pretty amazing,” Marso said.
Once again, several of the same popular family-friendly events are back, including the kids 3-on-3 basketball tournament, youth pedal pull, cheer camp, inflatables, tailgate party and more.
“These things are all popular,” Marso said, “and they try to involve absolutely as many people as they can.”
