The girls team took second place at the Lynx Invitational at McHardy Park in Brandon on Thursday, a jump of three spots. “Our top five ran well, and a great pack of two to five with a 14-second span between No. 2 and No. 5,” said coach Larry Beesley. “It was good to see that pack of Lynx jerseys running well together.”
Kasey Presler placed fifth in the girls 4,000 meters with a time of 15:19. Other Lynx runners placing in the top 20 were Shelby Rahn, 14th at 16:35, Haley Kruger, 18th at 16:47, Courtney Gross, 19th at 16:51 and Lexi McGee, 20th at 16:59.
Aberdeen Central won the competition with 36 points; BV had 73, Sioux Falls Lincoln 89, Brookings 125, Yankton 125 and O’Gorman 194.
Beesley said running on home turf might have helped the girls, but they did look different in this competition, “a bit more comfortable and less nervous.”
Presler’s time set the school record at Brandon Valley, breaking it by 11 seconds. The record was previously set by Arielle Schmidt in 2007.
Aberdeen and Sioux Falls Roosevelt are the top two teams in the state right now, Beesley said, “but I really like our chances of placing in the top four in the state. These girls have worked hard and they are running with confidence that is showing in their racing.”
The junior varsity and middle school girls ran well also, Beesley said. “I was really happy with this group. Our numbers are down, but these girls are improving every week and will be racing better by the end of the season,” he said.
Middle schooler Laycee Cain just missed out on a medal in the 2200 meters with her time of 10:28, but she made the BV Top 10 List, along with Meghan Beldin, who turned in a time of 11:28.
BV boys
The boys ran into a tough meet a bit flat, Beesley said, taking fourth place in the contest. Sioux Falls Washington took first place with 50 points, followed by Brookings 53, Lincoln 62, BV 94, Yankton 149, O’Gorman 157 and Aberdeen Central 211.
“We knew that Brookings was for real after last week, but Washington and Lincoln also came in and caught us a bit off guard,” Beesley said. Running against tough teams can help the Lynx runners, however, the coach said. “We know that come October for the ESD and state meets, these teams are going to be in the thick of things. If we can match up with them now, then in these big meets we can work to get into these matches and move up the standings,” he said.
Among Brandon Valley runners, the positions change with each race. “Internal competition is very good, makes a stronger team,” Beesley said. “For us to close the gap on these tams each week and have positions changing every week shows me that we are a competitive team, and it leads me to think we are heading for a pretty good year.
Nathan Hauge placed fifth (17:04) and Zach Van Ede placed 11th (17:40) in the 5,000 meters, both earning awards.
“I really like our chances of placing in the top four in the state and being a contender to defend our ESD title,” Beesley said.
The JV and middle school boys ran well also. Freshman Adam Presler, eighth grader Mitchell Selken and seventh grader Jacob Hegland had great races, each one setting the class record at Brandon Valley. “This group is very competitive,” Beesley said. “As the year progresses, I feel this group may make the most improvement from meet to meet. There are two or three who will contend next year for varsity spots.”
Cody Dutson placed fourth and earned a medal in the middle school 2,200 meters. He and Matthew Skadsen each made the top 10 list at Brandon Valley for the McHardy Park course.
This week, the Lynx will compete at the Augustana Meet of Champions at the Sioux Falls Polo Grounds on Saturday, Sept. 11. The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. with junior varsity contests, with varsity runs starting at 10:45 a.m.
