Brandon Valley used four turnovers, a touchdown pass from new quarterback Sam Rall and two field goals by Ian McClanahan to beat Yankton 13-6 Friday night in Yankton.

Down 6-3 after halftime, Brandon Valley’s Matt Vandeberg intercepted a Jackson Pasco pass and moved the ball to the Lynx’s 22. On the next play, Rall hit receiver Brock Wickett on a 22-yard touchdown pass to give the Lynx the 10-3 lead.

Brandon Valley recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff when Yankton fumbled, and McClanahan added a 25-yard field goal to provide the final score.

But it was the Brandon Valley defense that earned the most praise from coach Chad Garrow after the game.

The Lynx stopped Yankton three times inside the red zone and forced two fumbles and picked off two passes.

“All of our defensive staff did a wonderful job against Yankton, having them ready for the double-wing offense,” Garrow said. “Each week we get better at executing.”

The Lynx held the Bucks to 213 total yards – 75 in the air. Yankton rushed for 138 yards on 43 attempts at an average of 3.2 yards per play.

Yankton scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter when Pasco hit Connor Fitzsimmons for a 19-yard score. Bucks kicker and tight end Terry Huber was injured on the touchdown and was taken off the field. The Bucks eventually missed the extra point.

Garrow said he was pleased with the performance of Rall in his second game at quarterback since former three-year starter Austin Sumner graduated last season.

Rall was 10-for-26 for 135 yards passing and had a big run on the team’s first drive of the game.
“Austin was a three-year starter and now we have a guy that really is a freshman or a sophomore (based on how much he’s played),” Garrow said of his senior. “But Sam is doing great. We are getting better. We are still throwing a lot of screens, which we count as our running game. We have some young kids who are coming along that are fast and have speed, too. We are progressing well. I like our team this year.”

Brandon Valley improves to 1-1 after falling 27-13 the first week to the rising stars of Sturgis.
The Lynx will play their first home game of the season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they take on Aberdeen Central in the annual Pigskin Classic.

“We need to improve in the red zone,” Garrow said, looking ahead to next week. “This past week, we didn’t turn the ball over as much as (we did against Sturgis), but it is difficult with the spread offense. We need to score those points to be competitive.”
