For the second time this season, Brandon Valley won all nine of their matches, blanking Rapid City Central Aug. 27 on their home court.

“We played well against Central,” said Jesse Gladis, head coach of the Lady Lynx tennis team. “It was a great match to get warmed up for the (Rapid City) Invite.”

Absent for the past five duals due to injury, Haley Rubin (No. 5 singles) returned to the lineup and handed Miranda Douglas 6-1, 6-2 set losses. She also teamed up with Erin Buse in No. 2 doubles play, where the Lynx duo controlled the 6-2, 6-0 match.

“Haley stepped up and played solid tennis,” Gladis said.

Rubin wasn’t the only Lady Lynx that turned in solid play. In No. 3 doubles, Hayley Naasz and Haylee Thomas charted two 6-0 set wins to keep Miranda Douglas and Lisa Krebs winless on the day.

R.C. Invite
Out of a field of 10 teams, Brandon Valley finished in the middle of the pack at the Aug. 27-28 Rapid City Invite, coming in behind O’Gorman, Rapid City Stevens, St. Thomas More and a team from Gillette, Wyo.

“I thought we played well in the tournament, but there is definitely room for a lot of improvement this year,” Gladis said. “We took losses from Stevens, O'Gorman and St. Thomas More. Those three teams could make up the top three through five in state this year.”

Haley Rubin and Erin Buse battled their way through a hard-fought match against the duo of Raforth/Gibbens from St. Thomas More.

“Haley and Erin played very well together, but still have a lot to work on, as this was their first weekend playing together,” Gladis said.

That win advanced them to the third place match against Young/Young from Gillette. The Wyoming team won 10-5.

Buse and Rubnin also earned the right to play for third place in their respective singles matches against two St. Thomas More players. Denali Raforth defeated Buse 10-3 in No. 3 singles, while Rubin bowed to Nichole Echrich, 10-5 in No. 5 singles.

BV 0, O’Gorman 9
Stacked in talent from top to bottom, Sioux Falls O’Gorman blanked Brandon Valley in dual play Aug. 31 at McKennan Park. It was the first team loss of the season for the Lady Lynx.

Despite the fact Brandon Valley came up winless, Gladis said his team played well.
“If you can be happy with a 0-9 loss, I guess this would be it,” he said. “We did look good, but O'Gorman just knows how to close out games and have a confidence in their strokes that we're still looking for. It will come in time for us, though.”

The Knights dominated in both singles and doubles, with Brandon Valley’s biggest threat coming from Hayley Naasz who battled Katie Schwebach to a 7-5 finish in the first set. Schwebach followed up with a 6-0 set win.

“Hayley almost won the first set of her match and really did a great job in the second set as well, even though the score didn't show it much,” Gladis said.

The Lynx coach was also impressed with the play of Erin Buse at No. 3 singles, who lost 6-1, 6-0 to Erin Hoffmann. “She looked awesome,” Gladis said.

Haley Rubin and Buse threatened the Mary Billion and Mary Prouse in No. 2 doubles action but the O’Gorman duo claimed the 6-4, 6-1 victory.

This week, the Lady Lynx host the Brandon Valley Team Invite on Friday and Saturday, with play beginning at 9 a.m. both days. Next week, they’ll travel to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Sept. 13 and Pipestone, Minn., on Sept. 14. Play for both of those matches begins at 4 p.m.
