With the nation’s focus on energy independence and sustainability, it’s important to promote the benefits of science and math among high school youth. Western Area Power Administration is doing just that by hosting the19th annual South Dakota Regional Science Bowl, a math and science competition for high school students, Jan. 21 at the Crossroads Convention Center, in Huron, beginning at 9:20 a.m.
Twenty-eight teams of high school students from throughout South Dakota, representing 19 schools will test their knowledge of science and vie for the coveted first place price and a free trip to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 26-30. The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science, improve awareness of career options in science and technology and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.
Vermillion High School, winner of the 2011 South Dakota Bowl, will try to defend its title among other participating teams, including Brandon Valley High School. The BVHS team is coached by Lisa Atkinson, and team members are Sean Rollag, Long Pham, Zach Van Ede, Dillon Waldera and Nicholas Tieszen.
The public is invited to watch the competition and support teams. Admission is free.
