The Mitchell Kernels proved their No. 1 ranking Thursday, as they sidelined the Lynx girls for a second time this season, this time a 64-56 setback.

Despite the loss, Lynx head coach Mark Stadem was pleased with his team’s effort.
“I liked our effort in this game,” said Stadem. “They are a very good team and anytime we made a defensive mistake, they took advantage of it.”

Mitchell led for nearly all 32 minutes of the contest. The only time the Lynx had an advantage was when junior Allison Koehn hit a 3-pointer with 5:17 left in the first quarter for a 5-4 lead.

The lead would be short lived, however, as less than a minute later, Mitchell’s Kristin Sabers scored an easy basket inside to give the Kernels an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 33-26 advantage at the half.

Mitchell went into a 16-point offensive production in the third and Brandon Valley put up 11 points for the 49-35 game. In the final quarter, the Lynx out-scored the Kernels 21-15, but the gap was too much to overcome. The Kernels maintained a double-digit advantage through nearly the entire second half until the Lynx made a small rally with less than 2 minutes to play.

Heidi Hoff, who scored a game-high 23 points and had seven rebounds, netted back-to-back buckets with about a minute to play that brought the Lynx within eight.

They came within six points with 18 seconds remaining when Koehn scored off a steal, before Mitchell’s Macy Miller and Young hit free throws to seal the game.

The Lynx were 20-56 from the field and 9-for-12 at the line. Hoff and Koehn led the team with 23 and 20 points, respectively. Briana Roegiers tossed in eight.

Mitchell shot 55 percent (27-50) from the field and got a team-high 22 points, six rebounds and five assists from junior Kerri Young. Miller finished with 16 points and Sabers scored 15.

Brandon Valley had a slight advantage on the boards, 23-21. Hoff and Koehn each pulled down seven. Hoff also had four blocked shots and two steals. The Lynx had 11 assists and 10 turnovers.

Mitchell recorded seven assists and 15 tuvnovers.

“We need to work on solidifying our defense a bit,” Stadem said. “Our rotation has changed with Charissa out, and we are searching for the right combinations.”
